Food Security and Agriculture
Detailed proposal and questions for review · Updated November 1, 2026
Alliance Agricultural Strategy
Hemispheric Agricultural Assets
The proposed partners span different climates, agricultural systems and infrastructure. Cooperation could diversify supply, improve storage and transport, and support small producers. Aggregate land or freshwater totals do not prove food self-sufficiency: water access, crop choices, distribution, ecological limits and household purchasing power must be assessed locally and across borders.
Current Challenges
Figures retained in this discussion are earlier draft estimates or scenarios unless a dated source is cited here. They are not current measurements, adopted budgets or validated AIP outcomes. Use the linked policy chapter for the current mechanism and corrected arithmetic.
US Agriculture
- Consolidation: Family farms disappearing, mega-farms dominate
- Subsidy capture: 80% of farm subsidies to top 20% of farms
- Labor: Dependent on undocumented workers—exploitative, unstable
- Environmental: Soil depletion, water pollution, emissions
- Rural decline: Agricultural automation = fewer jobs, hollowed communities
- Export dependency: Vulnerable to trade wars, foreign policy
Latin American Agriculture
- Inequality: Land concentrated in few hands
- Export orientation: Cash crops for export, local food insecurity
- Deforestation: Amazon, cerrado destruction for cattle, soy
- Climate vulnerability: Drought, flooding, shifting growing zones
- Investment gap: Infrastructure lacking for efficient agriculture
AIP Agricultural Vision
Alliance Food Security
- Self-sufficiency: Alliance produces all food needed for 895M (earlier membership scenario) people
- Diversification: Not dependent on any external source
- Climate resilience: Geographic diversity hedges climate risk
- Strategic reserve: Coordinated stockpiling for crisis
- Export surplus: Becomes tool for global engagement (food diplomacy)
Development Fund for Agriculture
- Infrastructure: Roads, storage, cold chains, ports in Latin America
- Technology transfer: Modern techniques to small farmers
- Credit access: Small farmer financing programs
- Processing: Value-add facilities in producing regions
- Standards: Sustainable practices required for Alliance market access
Labor Standards
- Living wage: Agricultural workers included in Alliance wage standards
- Safety: Occupational protections, pesticide regulation
- Housing: Decent housing for agricultural workers
- Immigration reform: Legal pathways for agricultural workers
- Mechanization: Where appropriate, with transition support
Environmental Sustainability
- Soil conservation: Required practices for Alliance membership
- Water management: Sustainable irrigation, watershed protection
- Emission reduction: Agricultural climate targets
- Deforestation halt: Amazon protection as membership condition
- Regenerative incentives: Payments for carbon sequestration, biodiversity
Policy Integration
With AIP Framework
- Stability Accounts: Rural Americans benefit from universal programs
- Healthcare: Agricultural workers covered (currently often excluded)
- No income tax: Benefits lower-income agricultural workers
- Development Fund: Agricultural infrastructure major component
With Immigration
- Legal pathways: Seasonal and permanent agricultural worker visas
- Development: Prosperity at source reduces desperate migration
- Integration: Path to citizenship for agricultural workers
With Climate
- Sustainable practices: Alliance agriculture is climate-positive
- Adaptation: Development Fund includes climate-smart agriculture
- Land use: Forest preservation as food security strategy
Projected Outcomes
- Food security: Alliance food self-sufficient by Year 10
- Rural prosperity: Higher farm incomes, more diverse rural economies
- Environmental: Sustainable intensification, deforestation halted
- Labor: Living wages, legal status, decent conditions
- Export capacity: Surplus for food diplomacy, humanitarian needs
Discussion Questions
- How do we balance efficiency (large farms) with equity (small farmers)?
- Can sustainable agriculture feed 895M (earlier membership scenario)+ without yield losses?
- How do we handle agricultural lobbies that benefit from current system?
- What about meat consumption and environmental impact?
- Is food self-sufficiency realistic or should we accept global trade?
Note: Agriculture is foundational but often overlooked in economic frameworks. Alliance agricultural integration offers food security, environmental sustainability, and rural prosperity. Validators invited to assess agricultural economics and policy.
Implementation and evaluation
Assign local production and watershed decisions to communities with state oversight; use international agreements for cross-border standards, logistics and emergency cooperation. Test farmer income and household access, not output alone.
